Background: Anxiety is a psychological response experienced by patients before undergoing surgery, including cesarean section. One of the non-pharmacological approaches used to relieve anxiety is the five-finger hypnosis technique that combines relaxation with positive suggestions. This study aims to evaluate the effect of five-finger hypnosis therapy on anxiety levels in patients undergoing cesarean section.
Method: The design of this study was a quasi-experiment with a two-group pre-test and post-test with control group design approach. A sample of 50 respondents was selected purposively and divided into two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The measuring instrument used was the APAIS (Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale) questionnaire. The experimental group was given a five-finger hypnosis intervention for 10 minutes. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests.
Results: Before the intervention, most respondents in the experimental group experienced moderate anxiety (60%), as did the control group (64%). After being given five-finger hypnosis, most participants in the experimental group experienced a decrease in anxiety to mild (80%), while in the control group most remained at a moderate level of anxiety (56%). The results of the analysis showed a significant decrease in anxiety in the experimental group (p = 0.000), and the difference in anxiety levels between the two groups was also significant (p = 0.009).
Conclusion: Five-finger hypnosis therapy has been proven effective in reducing anxiety levels in patients undergoing cesarean section. This approach can be considered as one of the non-pharmacological alternatives in nursing interventions to overcome preoperative anxiety.
