Type II Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that can lead to various complications, one of which is gangrenous wounds caused by peripheral circulatory disorders. These disorders can be detected through the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) examination. Uncontrolled blood glucose levels are believed to contribute to poor tissue perfusion and exacerbate wound characteristics in affected patients.
This study aims to determine the relationship between blood glucose levels, Ankle Brachial Index (ABI), and the characteristics of gangrenous wounds in patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus at Sultan Imanuddin Regional General Hospital, Pangkalan Bun.
This study used a descriptive correlative design with a cross-sectional approach. Samples were taken using purposive sampling technique with 42 respondents. Data were collected through examination of blood sugar levels, ABI measurements, and assessment of gangrene wound characteristics using the Meggit-Wagner classification. Data were analysed univariately and bivariately using the Spearman Rank test.
The results showed that most of the respondents had high blood sugar levels totalling 31 respondents (73.9%), almost half of the respondents had mild Ankle Brachial Index values totalling 16 respondents (38.1%), and almost half of the respondents had gangrene wound characteristics in degree 2 totalling 11 respondents (26%). From the results of the analysis there is a significant relationship between blood sugar levels with ankle brachial index (ABI) obtained a p-value of 0.00 smaller than the alpa value (0.05), and the results of the analysis of blood sugar levels with gangrene wound characteristics there is a significant relationship in type II diabetes mellitus patients obtained a p-value of 0.01 smaller than the alpa value (0.05). From this study it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between blood sugar levels with Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) and gangrene wound characteristics in Type II Diabetes Mellitus patients.
