Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The postoperative period is the phase after a patient undergoes surgery, starting from the recovery room to follow-up care. The postoperative period has a negative impact on patient health, affecting the healing process, prolonging hospitalisation, increasing treatment costs, reducing quality of life, causing sleep disturbances, and increasing morbidity rates. There are several other factors that influence pain levels and sleep quality in postoperative patients, namely the comfort of the care environment.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between pain levels and the comfort of the care environment with sleep quality in postoperative patients.

Methods: This study employed a correlational design and a cross-sectional approach, utilising a sample of 60 respondents. The sampling technique used was consecutive sampling. Data collection methods included the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), a comfort questionnaire for the healthcare environment, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Univariate data analysis in this study used frequency distribution, while bivariate analysis used the Spearman Rank test.

Results: Most postoperative patients reported moderate comfort, while nearly half reported severe pain. Meanwhile, nearly all postoperative patients experienced poor sleep quality. There was a significant association between pain and sleep quality in postoperative patients with a p-value of 0.008 < 0.05. However, there was no significant association between healthcare environment comfort and sleep quality in postoperative patients with a p-value of 0.243 > 0.05.

Conclusion: The higher the pain level, the worse the sleep quality; however, there is no correlation between environmental comfort and sleep quality in postoperative patients at Sultan Imanuddin General Hospital in Pangkalan Bun.
