Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is a serious health issue that requires comprehensive management, as it can lead to organ damage without clear symptoms. In addition to medical treatment, complementary therapies such as consuming jicama (Pachyrhizus erosus) juice may serve as an alternative to help stabilize blood pressure. This study aims to determine the effect of jicama juice on blood pressure among hypertensive patients in the working area of Kumpai Batu Atas Public Health Center.

Methods: This is a quantitative study using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest with two group design approach, employing purposive sampling technique. The total population consisted of 78 respondents, with a sample size of 44 respondents. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test.

Results: The results showed a significant decrease in blood pressure in the intervention group after being given jicama juice (p = 0.001), while the control group showed no significant change (p = 0.157). This indicates that jicama juice has an effect on lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients.

Conclusion: The study demonstrates that jicama juice contributes to lowering blood pressure among individuals with hypertension, with a shift in blood pressure status from grade 1 and 2 hypertension to a milder category after the intervention. Therefore, jicama juice can be considered as a complementary therapy in the management of hypertension.
